Tips from Matt Cutts, Head of Google Webspam Team:
Great content will bring you many links.
Answer Questions – participate in the community by answering questions that may help others. If you help someone the probability is high that that person will link to you.
Original Research – share the results of your research with the public. If someone benefits from your search the probability is high that they are going to remember you and link to you.
Newsletters – email useful info to people’s inboxes. This will result in increased traffic and conversions.
Social Media – participate in a forum or a blog and participate also on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+ and other social platforms.
Doing a Presentation at a Conference is another great way to get links.
Directories – enter your business on online Business Directories
Create a Blog and become an authority in your field – there is no excuse these days for a company/ individual not having a blog. Use your blog to establish yourself. Your blog is your online business card, your Profile on the internet.
How-tos and tutorials. Did you learn something useful? Put it on the internet. It may help someone else.
Do you have a free product or service? make it available to others. A good example is open source such as a new free plugin for WordPress. If you develop a free plugin and make it available for others to use… you won’t have to go to people… people will come to you. You do the work once and people downstream will come to you. Some will be grateful for what you have done and they will link to you.
Ensure your website has good site architecture. Ask yourself: Can my site be crawled? can my site’s URLs be bookmarked? What about my internal links – can Google get to all the pages on my site? Make it easy to link to your site as well as to individual pages and posts within your site.
Increase your Website’s PageRank with Link Building
PageRank is what SEO is all about. The higher the number of quality links to your website the higher your rankings on Google and other Search Engines (i.e the higher your website will show on search pages).
There are many ways to build links. Build links in a systematic way. GOOGLE IS LOOKING FOR SITES THAT GIVE THE BEST CONTENT TO USERS, SITES THAT GIVE THE BEST USER EXPERIENCE!
One of the golden rules is to build links from a variety of sources including:
GooglePlus: change from a Non Follow to a Do follow link
LinkedIn – easily create a Do Follow link
Post Comments on Articles/ Blogs you read (pointing back to your page)
Create great reviews for products and services you use… more often than not the company will link to you
If you have more than one website, inter-link them
Video marketing – post a video to YouTube and other video platforms and link back to your website
it doesn’t matter if some links have more weight than others – you need diversity and consistency. Don’t go from 0 links to 200 links overnight… consistently build over time.
To understand how links work and their relevance to Google, let’s start by having a look at a few definitions:
Page Rank (1) is an algorithm used by Google Searchto rank websites in their search engine results. PageRank is a way of measuring the importance of website pages. According to Google: PageRank works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. The underlying assumption is that more important websites are likely to receive more links from other websites.
PageRank is not the only algorithm used by Google to order search engine results, but it is the first algorithm that was used by the company, and it is the best-known. (2)
Algorithm a step-by-step procedure for calculations.
Google Panda is a change to Google’s search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February 2011. The change aimed to lower the rank of “low-quality sites” or “thin sites”, and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results. (3)
Google Penguin is a code name for a Google algorithm update that was first announced on April 24, 2012. The update is aimed at decreasing search engine rankings of websites that violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines by using now declared black-hat SEOtechniques involved in increasing artificially the ranking of a webpage by manipulating the number of links pointing to the page. (4)
Google wrote: “…so rather than focusing on specific algorithmic tweaks, we encourage you to focus on delivering the best possible experience for users”. (5)
More from Google: “One other specific piece of guidance we’ve offered is that low-quality content on some parts of a website can impact the whole site’s rankings, and thus removing low quality pages, merging or improving the content of individual shallow pages into more useful pages, or moving low quality pages to a different domain could eventually help the rankings of your higher-quality content”.
So another Golden Rule is to focus on developing high-quality content rather than trying to optimize for any particular Google algorithm.
What Do Follow and Non-Follow Links mean?
Let us assume that you have added links on your Linkedin Profile. What is the difference between ‘Do Follow’ and ‘Non-Follow’ links?
Do Follow Links – the website you have your links on share PageRank with you.
Non-follow links – the website you have your links on does not share PageRank with you (in such a case the website is not pointing to your website).
The aforementioned is true for Linkedin, Google+ and any other sites using Do Follow and Non Follow links.
As already mentioned above the more PageRank (PR) backlinks you have the higher ranking your website is going to have.
Not all links are created equal. It is more important for Messi to have Cristiano Ronaldo say that he is one of the best soccer players in the world than Joe Soap saying it. But Messi will be ranked even higher if Cristiano Ronaldo and many Joe Soaps say Messi is a good soccer player.
So, how do I get Do Follow links to my website?
You can get Do Follow links to your website by Directory Submissions, Article Marketing, by commenting on Pages, Blogs and Forums and by ensuring you change from a Non-Follow to a Do-Follow backlink on Google+ and Linkedin as explained below:
Two Directories you can try for instant quality links:
Don’t submit the exact same text to all Directories – change the text slightly
Jeffrey M Louis wrote on his Ezine Article: “Submitting articles to article directories is a free method to help any web page to be seen and recognized online. It will boost your web page in the search engines to ultimately boosting your search rankings in any SEO network. Article marketing will also help gain respect from those who are looking for an expert in your field of work”. (6)
Jeff continues: “The number one benefit of submitting to a good article directory is that the directory you submit to is already a solid web page for SEO purposes. Which means if you were to write an article targeting a keyword you will see results fast. With article marketing you can target selected keywords and actually see results on the top search engines within days”.
EzineArticles.com and GoArticles.com are the best and easiest free article distribution services that will instantly explode your websites traffic in a very short time frame. They give you : 1) quality traffic 2) market visibility and 3) media exposure. They have literally million of visitors every month and they are FREE! Article distribution could not be any easier.

Blogs (and Pages) Comments
An easy effective way to link back to your site. This is a WIN-WIN for all. You are helping the site you are commenting on and helping your own site. You can: 1) show your URL at the end of your comment or 2) should you not wish to show your URL on your comment make sure that your URL is showing on your Profile (when people click on your photo – they will be directed to your Profile that shows your URL – if you have added your website to your profile).
Another Golden Rule is to have links not only to your homepage but have links to your DEEP PAGES as well. This is the reason for you to have your Blog’s URL on you EzinesArticles.com (not just your homepage URL).
As for Blog Comments (above), join a Forum and leave your comment (linking back to your website/ webpage).
Google Plus Backlink
Google Plus is an effective way for you to get Do Follow links from.
Go to your Google+ page. There are two important sections for you to add your link(s) on your Google+ page:
‘Story’ (at the top of the page)
‘Links’ at the bottom of the page.
Click ‘Edit’ each of the sections and add your link(s). Afterwards test that your links are correctly linked.
Type the keyword/ keywords you are interested in, for example: ‘Search Engine Optimization’ > enter > set: ‘How often’, etc > click ‘Create Alert’.
One more good reason to use Google+
It is highly recommended to increase the Google+ participation as your activities on Google+ will continue to show up on Google search results along with the photo of the author associated with that activity. This will boost the usability of Google+. You could also create original content and post on Google+. By increasing the participation, you are also increasing the chances of appearing on Google search results. (7)
Another important and easy way to get Do-Follow Backlinks.
Login to Linkedin > click ‘Edit Profile’ tab > click ‘Edit Contact Info’: on the new window that opens click the edit pencil next to ‘websites’ > enter your website’s URL.
You can enter a maximum of three URLs.
This is so easy and you got yourself one (or you can have as many as three) DO FOLLOW Links. Well done!
Final Golden Rule: Keep building links, keep improving rankings and keep going after new keywords.
