Hi Julie,

Do you have to?

Answer: yes, you should – do it as soon as possible!

If your website’s URL starts wit ‘http’ anyone visiting your website will read ‘Not secure’ next to your URL. This will turn visitors away and you will lose traffic.

Https (or Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) is the answer to the data protection issue. Https offers an extra layer of security because it uses SSL to move data. For all intents and purposes, HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP.

Google says this gives websites a small ranking benefit, only counting a “very lightweight signal” within the overall ranking algorithm.

‘Http’ will detrimentally affect your SEO (Search Engine Optimization). If you want a higher rank on Google Search do “everything right” including having your website’s URL beginning with ‘https’.

Is it Easy?

Answer: Incredibly easy.

Certain hosting companies (for example Yahoo) will allow you to easily change from ‘http’ to ‘https’. In most cases however you will have to phone the company hosting your website and they will re-direct from ‘http’ to ‘https’. Once the hosting company does the change you will have to wait a few hours for the change to propagate throughout the internet.

My website’s URL was  http://www.wordpresstrainingjohannesburg.com/ .

It has been changed to:
https://www.wordpresstrainingjohannesburg.com/

So what happens now is that regardless of whether a user types one or the other, that user ends-up on my homepage.

So, in reply to “Is it easy”? The answer is, yes it is, do it as soon as you can..

Trust the a.m. is of assistance.

Cheers,
Tony
