Content Quality in Bing Ranking

The Role of Content Quality in Bing Ranking

On behalf of the Bing Content Quality Team, Michael Basilyan, Senior Program Manager, wrote an interesting Blog entitled “The Role of Content Quality in Bing Ranking”.

Content Quality_2 Michael wrote: “Content Quality is one of the primary dimensions along which we optimize our ranking models. This is good news for web masters because the three pillars of Content Quality are largely in their control. And the great news for users? Content Quality means we are serving more authoritative, useful, and better designed content.

According to the article ‘Content Quality’ is a Primary Factor in Ranking

Ranking = f(Topical Relevance, Context, Content Quality)

In Bing, the relevance of a result is a function of:

  • Topical relevance to the query (“Does it address the query?”)
  • Context (“is the query about a recent topic”), and
  • Content Quality (as measured by the three pillars described below)

The Three Pillars of Content Quality

These are:

  • Authority: can we trust this content?
  • Utility: is the content useful and sufficiently detailed?
  • Presentation: is the content well-presented and easy to find?

Authority

When Bing evaluates the page with regard toauthority, they try to answer the question, “Can we trust this content, its author, or the website? If you are the author of the Blog, ensure that your name is shown rather than the word “admin”.

Utility

When considering the utility of the page, Bing models try to predict whether the content is sufficiently useful for the topic it is trying to address. Does the page provide ample supporting information, etc…

Presentation

A well-presented page will have an easy-to-read, accessible design, and will make its primary content easy to find.

I enjoyed reading this blog, learning the importance of the various pillars of content quality, particularly authorship.

Download or Embed Any Document

Download or Embed Any Document

I have had students asking me which is the best download or embed plugins for WordPress. I have experienced some good plugins and for a while I used ‘Download Monitor’ and ‘Vanilla PDF’.

Of all the download and embed plugins for WordPress the best for me is ‘Embed Any Document’ due to the following reasons:

  • It supports Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PDF, etc…
  • so easy to install and activate
  • so easy to add a document to any post or page
  • IT WORKS!

I now only use ‘Embed Any Document’ and this plugin is the one I recommend to my students. Should you wish to install ‘Embed Any Document’ follow the easy steps below:

Go to your Admin Area > Hover over Plugins click ‘Add New’ > in the search bar enter ‘Embed Any Document’ > read Details and then click ‘Install Now’ > click ‘Activate the plugin’

Go to ‘Settings’ > click ‘Embed Any Document’

General Settings: Decide the settings you need > click ‘Save’

Hover over ‘Posts’ > click ‘Add New’

Click ‘Add Document’ button (refer image below):

Download or Embed Any Document

Click ‘Upload Document’ > Go to ‘Upload Files’ or ‘Media Library’ > click the document you want >

On the right side bar ‘Attachment Details’:

Gallery Link Target choose ‘New Window’; Gallery Link OnClick Effect choose ‘Keep’ > click ‘Insert’ button.

On the new panel that opens on ‘Viewer’ decide between ‘Google Docs Viewer’ or ‘Microsoft Office Online’ > click ‘Insert’.

Publish your post or page.

It is quite straight forward to embed a YouTubne video. Let’s say you would like to embed Abba’s Dancing Queen.

How to Embed a YouTube Video

Open a new page or post > click ‘Text’ and paste the HTML code > that’s it!

How to Embed a YouTube Video

Click ‘Publish’ > click ‘View post’ or ‘view page’ and enjoy the video!

To embed a YouTube as a Widget:

Go to Widgets > paste the HTML code into a ‘Text’ Widget. Even if you don’t know HTML you can easily change the ‘width’ and the ‘height’ of your video on the actual code.

That simple – have fun!

Understanding the Long Tail of Keyword Demand

Understanding the Long Tail of Keyword Demand

It all begins with words typed into a search box.

Keyword research is one of the most important, valuable, and high return activities in the search marketing field. Ranking for the “right” keywords can make or break your website. Through the detective work of puzzling out your market’s keyword demand, you not only learn which terms and phrases to target with SEO, but also learn more about your customers as a whole.

It’s not always about getting visitors to your site, but about getting the right kind of visitors. The usefulness of this intelligence cannot be overstated – with keyword research you can predict shifts in demand, respond to changing market conditions, and produce the products, services, and content that web searchers are already actively seeking. In the history of marketing, there has never been such a low barrier to entry in understanding the motivations of consumers in virtually every niche.

Let’s assume we have an online shoe store. It would be great to rank #1 for the keyword “shoes” – or would it?

The Search Demand Curve-Understanding the Long Tail of Keyword Demand

It’s wonderful to deal with keywords that have 5,000 searches a day, or even 500 searches a day, but in reality, these “popular” search terms actually make up less than 30% of the searches performed on the web. The remaining 70% lie in what’s called the “long tail” of search. The long tail contains hundreds of millions of unique searches that might be conducted a few times in any given day, but, when taken together, they comprise the majority of the world’s demand for information through search engines.

Another lesson search marketers have learned is that long tail keywords often convert better, because they catch people later in the buying/conversion cycle. A person searching for “shoes” is probably browsing, and not ready to buy. On the other hand, someone searching for “best price on Air Jordan size 12” practically has their wallet out!

How to Create Tiled Galleries

How to Create Tiled Galleries

Charlene’s Question: Hi Tony, will you please refresh my mind. How do I create a tiled gallery?

Hi Charlene,

Should you have a free version of WordPress (I recall you do have a free version of WordPress):

Make sure you have the correct settings in the Admin Area.

Go to Admin > Settings > Media:

Check (tick) the boxes as per the screenshot below:

You are almost done:

Go to the Page or Post where you would like to add your Gallery, say for example that you want to add your Gallery to a new page:

Hover over ‘Pages’ > click ‘Add New’: new page opens > click ‘Add Media’ button: new window opens: click ‘Create Gallery’ > click ‘Select Files’ > choose your images and click ‘Open’ > click the ‘Create a New Gallery’ button.

On the Edit Gallery window go to ‘Gallery Settings’ towards the top right hand corner of that window > and go to ‘Type’. On the drop-down menu click on ‘Tiled Mosaic’> click ‘Insert Gallery’.

And that’s it! Trust the aforementioned is of assistance to you.

Upload a PDF File into WordPress

Upload a PDF File into WordPress

You can choose one of 3 available options:

Method 1 – Link from your Post or Page

Uploading and downloading a PDF into WordPress is an almost identical process to uploading any other type of media such as an image. You can very easily upload a PDF File, Microsoft Word Document, Excel Spreadsheet or a PowerPoint Presentation.

Go to Dashboard > Post > Add New (or you could go to Pages > Add New) > click ‘Add Media’.

Best Practice when uploading Files: make sure the file is all lower case and use hyphens if it has multiple names.

Once the ‘Insert Media’ window opens:

Click ‘Upload Files’ > click ‘Select Files’ > click on the PDF file you want to upload >

Once the file has been uploaded look on the right column ‘Attachment Details’:

Title: enter the text you want to link to the download (for example ‘Download Setcom Subscription Form’)

Caption: no need to enter a Caption for PDF files

Description: Setcom Subscription Form

Link to: Media File

> click ‘Insert into Post’

Click ‘Save Draft’ > click ‘Preview’ >

Once the preview page opens:

Click on ‘Download Setcom Subscription Form’.  And that’s it! Well done!! To view the PDF file I have uploaded to this Post click the link below:

Download Setcom Subscription Form >

Method 2 – Embed into your Post or Page

For this you need to download and activate the ‘vanilla-pdf-embed’ plugin.

Then to  embed a PDF you’ve uploaded to your WordPress site’s media library, simply put the URL for the attachment page in your post on its own line. The PDF will be embedded with the default settings at that location, as if it were using oEmbed.

If you hover the bottom part of the PDF document (in the example below ‘Setcom’s Subscription Agreement’ a window pops-up enabling you to get the document’s full width, decrease/ increase in size, save and print (this window pops-up when I view this page using a Chrome browser but not on Firefox).

Method 3

You need to Add the plugin ‘Download Monitor’ by Mike Jolley.  Some of the features include:

1. you can make the PDF only available to Members of your website.

2. it provides you with Stats: you can easily track download counts as well as users download attempts.

Below what the button looks like:

I trust the above mentioned is of assistance.

Effective Techniques for Organic Link Building

Effective Techniques for Organic Link Building

Tips from Matt Cutts, Head of Google Webspam Team:

  • Great content will bring you many links.
  • Answer Questions – participate in the community by answering questions that may help others. If you help someone the probability is high that that person will link to you.
  • Original Research – share the results of your research with the public. If someone benefits from your search the probability is high that they are going to remember you and link to you.
  • Newsletters – email useful info to people’s inboxes. This will result in increased traffic and conversions.
  • Social Media – participate in a forum or a blog and participate also on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+ and other social platforms.
  • Doing a Presentation at a Conference is another great way to get links.
  • Directories – enter your business on online Business Directories
  • Create a Blog and become an authority in your field – there is no excuse these days for a company/ individual not having a blog. Use your blog to establish yourself. Your blog is your online business card, your Profile on the internet.
  • How-tos and tutorials. Did you learn something useful? Put it on the internet. It may help someone else.
  • Do you have a free product or service? make it available to others. A good example is open source such as a new free plugin for WordPress. If you develop a free plugin and make it available for others to use… you won’t have to go to people… people will come to you. You do the work once and people downstream will come to you. Some will be grateful for what you have done and they will link to you.
  • Ensure your website has good site architecture. Ask yourself: Can my site be crawled? can my site’s URLs be bookmarked? What about my internal links – can Google get to all the pages on my site? Make it easy to link to your site as well as to individual pages and posts within your site.
  • Make a few videos.

Wise words!

Cheers,

Tony

How does Google handle Duplicate Content?

How does Google handle Duplicate Content?

Matt Cutts of Google states that about 25-30% of content on the net is duplicate and that it is not all spam.

Google looks for duplicate content and then tries to group it together and treat it as one piece. So when Google comes across two identical pages Google may decide to show just one of the pages on search results. Not all duplicate content is spam – it just needs to be clustered appropriately.

If all you do is duplicate content and you are doing it in an abusive, deceptive, malicious or manipulative way than expect Google to take action and treat your content as spam.

How can small sites become popular?

How can small sites become popular? Can smaller guys outperform the bigger guys?

Matt Cutts of Google suggests that it is important that your site is dynamic, responds quickly and has superior content. Matt refers to how sites such as Facebook and Instagram started small. MySpace was around when Facebook started.

If you are doing it better then in time you can expect to grow. Focus on your niche market. Cover it well and branch out from there.

Smaller guys can outperform the bigger guys as long as they do a good job. Don’t stop producing superior content.
